Norm Eisen on Robert Hur’s Unconvincing Congressional Testimony

By March 12, 2024No Comments

“Robert Hur’s report has already drawn widespread and justified criticism. His testimony before Congress has done nothing to quell concerns about his conduct. Hur’s explanations and justifications for the gratuitous and inappropriate language he used in his report on President Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents merely echoed his previous and flawed rationale. He again has failed to address the core issue: his comments were unnecessary within the context of a legal report. A report which, it is worth reiterating, concluded that no crime was committed by the President and recommended no charges be filed.

Hur’s insistence on discussing President Biden’s memory and cognitive functions, especially in relation to sensitive family matters, was not only irrelevant to the legal findings but also a departure from professional standards. Legal inquiries should be rooted in facts and law, not personal judgments or biased assessments. By declining to live up to these basic standards, Hur has politicized a legal process unnecessarily, and has undermined public trust in our justice system.”
