TOP TAKEAWAYS FROM THE FIRST HALF:

Top Trump Officials Testify They Repeatedly Told Trump That His Election Fraud Claims Were False.
Yet Trump and Others Persisted to Try and Overturn the Will of the Voters

Washington, DC – The January 6th Select Committee just wrapped up part one of its first hearing. Here is what we have heard so far:

  • The committee laid out damning new, never-before-seen video and documentary evidence collected by non-partisan career prosecutors.
  • This includes sworn statements from top Trump officials like Former Attorney General Bill Barr, chief campaign advisor Jason Miller, Trump campaign attorney Matt Morgan, Marc Short, and even his own family members like Ivanka Trump.
  • They and other evidence make it clear that:
    • President Trump knew his claims of election fraud were false;
    • President Trump led a months-long, coordinated, seven-part plan to overturn the results of the 2020 election and stop the transfer of power through whatever means necessary. GOP Vice-Chair of the Committee, Liz Cheney previewed the following evidence:
      • Cheney: Trump put “illegal and unconstitutional” pressure on Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the election and, when he refused, Trump agreed that the VP should be hanged by supporters storming the Capitol;
      • Cheney: Trump “engaged in a massive effort to spread false and fraudulent information to convince huge portions of the U.S. population that fraud had stolen the election from him.”
      • Cheney: President Trump gave no order to deploy the National Guard that day and even said that his supporters storming the Capitol “were doing what they should be doing.”
      • Cheney: Trump tried to replace the Attorney General and other officials with those who would help overturn an election Trump knew he lost;
      • Cheney: Trump “corruptly” pressured state legislators & election officials to change election results after he lost, including in Georgia.

“It’s now more clear than ever that Donald Trump and his MAGA allies knew they’d lost a fair election yet planned and promoted the assault on our country in order to block the transfer of power,” said Defend Democracy Project Communications Director Nicole Haley. “Liz Cheney called Trump’s actions ‘illegal’ and ‘unconstitutional.’ Americans deserve to hear the truth of what happened and how the MAGA movement continues to try to exert their will on the country.”

After the break, the Committee will continue to lay out real evidence gathered by non-partisan career prosecutors proving that Trump and his MAGA allies planned, promoted, and paid for a criminal conspiracy to overturn an election they lost.

This criminal conspiracy extends well beyond the violence perpetrated on January 6, 2021, that injured 140 police officers, including making it harder for people to vote, attempting to appoint bogus electors to overturn the will of voters, and intimidating state officials to change the results in contested states.

Getting to the truth during these hearings and then demanding accountability at the courts and the ballot box is how we stop the current MAGA campaign to sabotage future elections by changing state laws, threatening state officials, and packing election administration offices so that they can have the final say over election results – even when they lose.
