Washington, D.C. – Two years ago tomorrow, a criminal conspiracy to overturn the results of a fairly won election culminated in the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol and our country. That dark day took the lives of law enforcement officers, threatened members of Congress, the Vice President, and staff, and prevented the peaceful transfer of power.

Upon completing its investigation of the plot to overturn the election, the House Select Committee to investigate the events of January 6th made criminal referrals to the Department of Justice so that this would never happen again. It’s now up to the Justice Department and the courts to ensure we do not reach the third anniversary of this horrific attack with Trump and his co-conspirators avoiding accountability.

“The sad truth is two years later, there has been no real accountability for Donald Trump and the ringleaders of the January 6th attack, and MAGA has strengthened its hold on the Republican party,” said Leslie Dach, co-chair of Defend Democracy Project. “The new House majority is full of election deniers and remains along with a politicized Supreme Court, hell-bent on taking away our freedoms. Along with their counterparts in major state legislatures, they are trying their hardest to make sure that MAGA has the final say in who leads us, not American voters.

“The threat posed by those who plotted to overturn the election remains as long as those responsible escape accountability. Trump and the MAGA House majority support known white nationalists and dangerous militias, promote violence, and support harassment of public and private citizens, endangering our country and our freedoms. No one is above the law in America. During this solemn anniversary, we remember those who gave their lives to protect democracy in our country, we salute the January 6th Select Committee and others who have worked to shine a light on those responsible for the attack and we demand accountability to ensure nothing like we saw two years ago ever happens again.”
