DDP Statement on the Immunity Claim Decision

By February 6, 2024February 12th, 2024No Comments

Today, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit, in a unanimous ruling, upheld the Constitution and common sense. Donald Trump is not immune from prosecution by virtue of his former position as president.

A core principle of American democracy is that the law applies equally to everyone, even a president, and that it may hold everyone accountable for their actions. This principle was at stake in this decision. Trump argued that he must have “total immunity,” even for “events that cross the line.” That sounds like a dictatorship, and the courts have been right to reject it.

It is critically important that the D.C. Circuit denied Trump’s absurd immunity claim. Today’s well-reasoned decision brings us one step closer toward a full and fair trial on the merits and a resulting verdict that is rendered on the law and the evidence.
