With Compelling New Evidence and Footage, the January 6 Select Committee Laid Out the Months-Long Effort to Overturn the Will of the People

Washington, DC – The January 6th Select Committee just wrapped up its first hearing. Here is what we have heard so far:
A preview of the Committee’s case that Trump and his MAGA allies planned and promoted the conspiracy to overturn the will of the people. Vice-Chair Liz Cheney laid out a preview of the hearings over the coming weeks, including sworn statements from top Trump officials like former Attorney General Bill Barr (who called Trump’s claims of fraud “bullshit”) and Ivanka Trump.
The “sophisticated” plan to overturn the election. Cheney laid out the criminal plan to overturn the will of the people, including how Trump “engaged in a massive effort to spread false and fraudulent information to the American public claiming the 2020 election was stolen from him” and how he “corruptly pressured state election officials, and state legislators, to change election results.”
The seven-point plan in full:
- “President Trump engaged in a massive effort to spread false and fraudulent information to the American public claiming the 2020 election was stolen from him.”
- “President Trump corruptly planned to replace the Acting Attorney General, so that the Department of Justice would support his fake election claims.”
- “President Trump corruptly pressured Vice President Pence to refuse to count certified electoral votes in violation of the US Constitution and the law.”
- “President Trump corruptly pressured state election officials, and state legislators, to change election results.”
- “President Trump’s legal team and other Trump associates instructed Republicans in multiple states to create false electoral slates and transmit those slates to Congress and the National Archives.”
- President Trump summoned and assembled a violent mob in Washington and directed them to march on the US Capitol.”
- “As the violence was underway, President Trump ignored multiple pleas for assistance and failed to take immediate action to stop the violence and instruct his supporters to leave the Capitol.”
Trump agreed that Vice President Mike Pence should be hanged. For the first time, Trump’s chilling words were made public. Trump said “Maybe our supporters have the right idea. Mike Pence deserves it.”
The Proud Boys showed up at the Capitol long before Trump’s rally. Horrifying new footage showed the assault on the Capitol complex, and how the crowd believed they were taking direction from Donald Trump himself. A documentary filmmaker detailed the movements of the organization before and on the day, and a Capitol police officer spoke about her experience on the front line of the attack.
“The horrifying new revelations from Vice-Chair Liz Cheney should leave no further doubts that Trump and his MAGA allies planned and promoted the conspiracy to overturn the election they lost,” said Defend Democracy Project Communications Director Nicole Haley. “The brutal new footage and evidence presented by the Committee shows the depth of the conspiracy, showing there was nothing Trump wouldn’t stoop to remain in power.”
On Monday, the Committee will continue to lay out real evidence gathered by non-partisan career prosecutors proving that Trump and his MAGA allies planned, promoted, and paid for a criminal conspiracy to overturn an election they lost.
This criminal conspiracy extends well beyond the violence perpetrated on January 6, 2021, that injured 140 police officers, including making it harder for people to vote, attempting to appoint bogus electors to overturn the will of voters, and intimidating state officials to change the results in contested states.
Getting to the truth during these hearings and then demanding accountability at the courts and the ballot box is how we stop the current MAGA campaign to sabotage future elections by changing state laws, threatening state officials, and packing election administration offices so that they can have the final say over election results – even when they lose.
