Washington, D.C. – Today, Defend Democracy Project released a new report, Two Years Later: January 6th and the Ongoing MAGA Threat to Our Country, which details the ongoing threat to our country and the current state of the investigations.
Two years ago, a criminal conspiracy to overturn the results of a fairly won election culminated in the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol and our country. That dark day took the lives of law enforcement officers, threatened members of Congress, the Vice President, and staff, and prevented the peaceful transfer of power.
“Two years ago, the attack on our country showed the tragic consequences of what happens when Trump and MAGA Republicans are allowed to seek to hold on to power at any cost,” said Nicole Haley, communications director for Defend Democracy Project. “Today’s report shows the importance of accountability for any crimes committed in the conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election. Those responsible for the violent conspiracy and vicious attack on our country must not be allowed to escape accountability.”
The threat to our country did not end on January 6th, 2021. Around the country, conspiracy theorists, MAGA Republicans, and election deniers serve in the highest seats of government. MAGA election deniers are in the House of Representatives, the courts, and running local elections while state legislatures are still passing laws to restrict voting. MAGA is here to stay, and continues to pose an ongoing threat to our democracy.
