Washington D.C. – Today, Representative Jamie Raskin was elected by House Democrats to be the Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee. While serving on the House Select Committee investigating the January 6th attack on our Capitol, Rep. Raskin has been a champion for democracy. In this role, he will continue to stand up for democratic norms by fighting spurious, politically motivated investigations planned by Oversight Committee Republicans which erode the public’s faith in Congress and legitimate investigations the legislative branch should pursue. In response to this news, Defend Democracy Project Co-Chair Brad Woodhouse released the following statement:
“House Democrats have made an excellent choice in electing Jamie Raskin as the Ranking Member on the House Oversight Committee. Whether as a professor of constitutional law, as the manager of Trump’s second impeachment trial, or as a leading member of the January 6th Select Committee, Jamie Raskin has always been a champion of the truth and our democracy. MAGA Republicans in the House have already admitted that their conspiracy-filled investigations are about hurting Democrats and President Biden so they can gain more power for themselves. Republicans, who are simply doing the bidding of Donald Trump and the MAGA wing of the party by substituting investigations for an agenda that actually helps people, have met their match in Representative Raskin.”
