Washington, D.C. – This evening, President Biden delivered a speech on the threat to our country posed by those who deny the results of elections and incite violence against their fellow citizens and elected officials, all spearheaded by the former president and his MAGA allies. These kinds of hateful, despicable actions have no place in our politics, and it is up to every American, including those we’ve chosen to represent us, to condemn political violence in all its forms. Those who choose not to condemn such disinformation and violence are just as complicit in the scheme to undermine our fundamental rights.

“As President Biden said, there are election deniers running at every level of government who were directly involved in the conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election, and today question methods of voting, like early voting and mail-in voting, and still won’t commit to accepting the results, even if they lose,” said Defend Democracy Project Communications Director Nicole Haley. “Following the election-denier playbook, created by Trump, MAGA Republicans will stop at nothing to attempt to overturn our elections and infringe on our right to choose our own leaders.

“When Trump-loving Republicans violently stormed the Capitol on January 6th, they failed to reach their ultimate goal, but that failure didn’t stop them. They continue to threaten violence and harassment against election workers and poll workers. They even go as far as using baseless conspiracy theories and sowing disinformation, leading to the break in at Speaker Pelosi’s home and the violent attack on her husband.

“In America, we get to pick our leaders. There is a lot at stake this year. MAGA Republicans and election deniers will go to any length to overturn our rights, especially those that we view as most fundamental, like the right to vote and the right to access abortion. Americans must have the ability to choose who they want representing them, and they must be able to do that without fear of intimidation or violence.”
