McCarthy has pledged to disband the January 6 committee and help Trump and his allies evade accountability for their efforts to overturn the election. With a tiny House majority, McCarthy will be beholden to the far right of his party to garner enough votes to win the speakership and he has already courted the support of MAGA extremist Marjorie Taylor Greene with promises to name her to key investigative committees.

Steve Scalise used his position as House Minority Leader to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the 2020 election, refusing to accept Joe Biden’s victory and claiming that, “In some states, they had results by 10 o’clock that night, and then in other states, it was days and weeks, and during those days and weeks you saw massive vote swings.” Scalise voted to overturn the results of the 2020 election and signed a brief supporting Texas’s lawsuit seeking to throw out the election results in key states. Scalise was a leader of the Trump-inspired “counter-programming” to the January 6 committee hearings, claiming that they were a “distraction” from issues like inflation and illegal immigration.

Tom Emmer signed an amicus brief in support of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s lawsuit seeking to overturn the election, claiming that, “All legal votes should be counted and the process should be followed — the integrity of current and future elections depends on this premise and this suit is a part of that process.” Although Emmer eventually voted to certify Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory, in his role as chair of the NRCC he backed dozens of candidates who worked to overturn the 2020 election, participated in the January 6 attack on the Capitol, and continue to spread conspiracy theories about the legitimacy of past elections, or plan to interfere with future elections.

In the last few years, Stefanik has transformed herself from a moderate Republican into a Trump-loving MAGA star who is often spoken of as a potential running mate for Trump in his 2024 campaign. Stefanik led the Republican pushback to the January 6 committee hearings, which she called an unfair attempt to “target patriotic Trump supporters across the country” and a “partisan witchhunt.” Stefanik has repeatedly called the January 6 committee a “sham” and indicated that it would be disbanded as soon as Republicans take control of the House.

Jordan’s counterpart at the Oversight Committee, Rep. James Comer has said that he will use his investigative power to try to drive Joe Biden out of office, telling Fox News two weeks ago, “I think that there are a lot of factors that are going to prevent Joe Biden from running. His age, the results of the midterm elections in two weeks. But also his son. Look, this Biden family investigation’s only going to ramp up in a Republican majority.” Jordan and Comer will be aided and abetted by Marjorie Taylor Greene, who is whipping votes for Kevin McCarthy’s speakership because “We have to have the gavel. That is extremely important because the gavel means subpoena power. And Republicans need subpoena power going over the next two years.” Far-right lawmakers have reportedly already secured a commitment from GOP leadership to launch an investigation into Nancy Pelosi and the Justice Department for their treatment of defendants jailed in connection with the January 6 attack on the Capitol.

Far-right extremist Marjorie Taylor Greene is set to be a major power broker in the Republican House majority. Greene is backing Kevin McCarthy’s bid to become Speaker of the House and she has reportedly been promised a seat on the Oversight Committee if he wins. Greene relentlessly spread lies about the 2020 election being “stolen” and was a key figure working in Congress to overturn the results in Donald Trump’s favor. Greene texted White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows frequently for strategic guidance on overturning the election and she went as far as to suggest declaring martial law to keep Trump in office. She also reportedly attended a December 21 White House meeting focused on efforts to pressure Mike Pence to help overturn the election. Greene wants to use her forthcoming position on the Oversight or Judiciary committee to “go on offense” against the January 6 committee and bring impeachment proceedings against a variety of Biden administration officials, including the president and vice president.
