Washington, D.C. – President Biden’s State of the Union address tonight reminded Americans that our country is still facing ongoing threats to democracy. Whether it is election deniers in leadership positions, state legislatures passing laws making it more difficult to vote, or threats and intimidation against election workers – our rights are at stake. Defend Democracy Project Communications Director Nicole Haley released the following statement:
“As President Biden said tonight, democracy must be an American issue, not a partisan issue. Our country has made great strides, but democracy remains at grave risk. MAGA, election deniers, insurrectionist supporters, and conspiracy theorists are in positions of power all across the country, including Republican leadership in the House of Representatives. Donald Trump and many of his allies have still not been held accountable for their roles in the January 6th attack on our Capitol and for trying to overturn an election they knew Trump lost. Election workers and officials around the country have been threatened with violence for doing their jobs. President Biden’s statement should serve as a reminder to the American people that the work to protect our democracy is not done. We applaud President Biden for his commitment to upholding our democratic ideals and defending our most basic freedoms. Americans decide who leads us – not people in power changing the rules to make it more difficult to vote, and certainly not former presidents who lose their elections.”
