Issue Brief No. 2:
Trump and His Allies Engaged in a Criminal Conspiracy, Used Violence, and Spread Lies to Try to Overturn an Election They Lost
Washington, DC – The Defend Democracy Project today released the second in a series of issue briefs ahead of the January 6 Committee hearings next month detailing how, after the election, Donald Trump and his allies coordinated a criminal conspiracy to overturn the results of the election. The Defend Democracy Project was launched this year to work with leading organizations and noted experts to get the facts out about the attack on our country on January 6th, the ongoing criminal conspiracy to take away our freedom to choose our own leaders, and to hold Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans accountable.
Issue Brief No 2. “Trump and His Allies Engaged in a Criminal Conspiracy, Used Violence, and Spread Lies to Try to Overturn an Election They Lost” lays out the months of planning undertaken by Trump and his co-conspirators, culminating with Trump inciting a violent mob to attack our country on January 6th. The January 6th Select Committee is expected to build on this already robust evidence of the criminal conspiracy to overturn the legitimate results of an election which Donald Trump lost.
Evidence of Trump and his associates using violence and lies to illegally attempt to overturn the election on January 6 is laid out in this report and includes:
-
Trump falsely alleging fraud while votes were still being counted the week of the election.
-
Trump personally contacting state election officials and pressuring them to overturn the results of the election.
-
Violent militias planning for a protest at the Capitol within days of the election.
-
Republican members of Congress using increasingly violent language in the lead-up to January 6.
-
Trump rallying January 6 rioters against his own vice president when Mike Pence refused to block the certification of the electoral college.
