Issue Brief No. 4:
Trump and His Allies Must Be Held Accountable to Protect Our Right to Choose Our Own Leaders

Washington, DC – The Defend Democracy Project today released the fourth in a series of issue briefs ahead of the January 6 Committee hearings next month detailing the vital need for accountability from those who planned, paid for, and promoted the conspiracy to overturn the election and the attack on our country on January 6, 2021. The Defend Democracy Project was launched this year to work with leading organizations and noted experts to get the facts out about the attack on our country on January 6th, the ongoing criminal conspiracy to take away our freedom to choose our own leaders, and to hold Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans accountable.

Issue Brief No 4. “Trump and His Allies Must Be Held Accountable to Protect Our Right to Choose Our Own Leaders” lays out the case for accountability for those who tried to overturn the election, including criminal prosecution where appropriate. The January 6th Select Committee is expected to make the case for accountability in a non-partisan, fact-based, and comprehensive manner, to give the American people the full story and ensure that this never happens again.

This issue brief argues that:

  • No person is above the law, not even members of Congress or former presidents.

  • The January 6 investigation is non-partisan, fact-based, and comprehensive.

  • Ongoing investigations by the DOJ, a Georgia grand jury, and the New York District Attorney and attorney general must follow where the facts lead.
