Washington, D.C. – With Donald Trump reportedly preparing to return to Twitter, a platform he used to spread disinformation, give aid and comfort to violent white nationalist groups and foment an assault on the Capitol, Defend Democracy Project co-chair Brad Woodhouse released the following statement:
“Donald Trump’s return to Twitter is a threat to democracy. Full stop. The disgraced former president used Twitter for years to spread dangerous conspiracy theories and disinformation, to inspire violent attacks against his opponents, and ultimately to incite a violent attack on our Capitol to overturn an election he knew he lost. And when Donald Trump had a chance early on January 6th to use Twitter responsibly to calm down his supporters and send them home, he continued to incite his supporters to hunt down his Vice President and to prolong the assault. Trump’s return to Twitter is a disaster for democracy and the only people who will benefit are Donald Trump and his extreme, election-denying MAGA supporters.”
