NEW POLLING: Voters In Arizona and Michigan Want Accountability For Those Responsible For January 6th
Washington, DC – This week, Defend Democracy Project and Public Policy Polling released new polling results that find voters in Arizona and Michigan support the investigation by the January 6th Select Committee and are calling for accountability for those responsible. This includes not only former president Donald Trump, but his Republican allies who helped plan, pay for, and promote the violent criminal conspiracy to overturn an election they knew they’d lost.
“The House Select Committee’s investigation has proven with overwhelming evidence that Trump and MAGA Republicans are responsible for the attack on our country on January 6th and the ongoing conspiracy to take away our right to pick who leads us. It is clear that American people across the country know this too,” said Defend Democracy Project Communications Director, Nicole Haley. “Donald Trump and his allies must be held accountable for their actions in the courts and at the ballot box in order to put a stop to the ongoing threat that impacts our right to choose who leads us.”
The threat against our country did not end after January 6th. MAGA Republicans, election deniers, and conspiracy theorists continue winning primary elections across the country, including in Arizona and Michigan. If elected in November, they will try to rewrite state laws and take away our right to choose our own leaders, no matter the cost.
In Arizona, an overwhelming majority (64%) of voters surveyed believe the investigation to be important for accountability and the protection of our right to vote. Over half (56%) of voters think the problem was not only with Donald Trump, but also with members of the Republican Party who support Trump’s ongoing crimes. This includes 62% of voters who are concerned (with 55% very concerned) about the Republican candidate for Governor, Kari Lake, who continues to push election conspiracies.
In Michigan, a majority (57%) of Michiganders support the investigation of the committee and 66% of Michiganders say the investigation is important to protect the will of the people. A majority (52%) of Michiganders think Trump and his team who took part in the insurrection on January 6th should be criminally prosecuted. 58% of voters surveyed are concerned about Republican gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon who still insists that the 2020 election was “stolen” from Donald Trump, without evidence.
The polling results found in Arizona and Michigan are consistent across the country from North Carolina and Georgia to Nevada. Because of the public committee hearings, voters are more overwhelmingly aware of this threat posed by Trump and MAGA Republicans than ever before. We expect to continue to see these results across the country.
These individuals must be stopped at the ballot box. It is the only way to ensure Trump and MAGA elected officials will not be successful in their ongoing violent plot to sabotage future elections, restrict voting rights, and attempt to change election results in the US.
