MAGA Republicans in Congress Echoed Trump’s False Claims and Were Directly Involved in the Scheme to Overturn the Will of the People
During today’s January 6th hearing, the committee revealed evidence which demonstrated that Republican members of Congress were directly involved in the illegal scheme to overturn the results of the 2020 election:
Members of Congress
Andy Biggs (AZ-5)
- In December 2020, Biggs reportedly met with Trump to discuss challenging the Electoral College.
- Ali Alexander, the architect of the ‘Stop the Steal’ movement that culminated in the Capitol insurrection, said he ‘schemed’ with Andy Biggs and Paul Gosar to organize the ‘Stop the Steal’ movement.
- Biggs has been named in a subpoena by the January 6th Committee for his involvement in “plans to bring protestors to Washington on January 6th and efforts to persuade state officials that the 2020 election was stolen,” as well as ‘potential involvement’ in “the former President’s efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.”
Mo Brooks (AL-5)
- Brooks claims to have “led the charge” in the fight to keep Trump in power after he had lost the 2020 election. After repeatedly repeating conspiracy theories that the election had been stolen, Brooks orchestrated a series of meetings at the White House where he plotted to overturn the election results and discuss actions for January 6.
- On January 6, Brooks delivered an inflammatory speech at Trump’s “Stop the Steal” rally, where he said it was time “American patriots start taking down names and kicking ass,” while wearing body armor underneath his clothing. Brooks then had the audacity to falsely state that there was evidence the Capitol rioters were not Trump supporters, but members of ANTIFA.
- In a June 2021 election rally, Brooks falsely claimed, “somewhere in the neighborhood of 900,000 to 1.7 million noncitizens voted in the 2020 presidential election overwhelmingly for Joe Biden.”
Matt Gaetz (FL-1)
- Rep. Gaetz was heavily involved in calls and meetings with Trump and his top aides as they devised a strategy to overturn the election. He reportedly attended numerous meetings to discuss strategies to prevent Joe Biden from taking office.
Louie Gohmert (TX-1)
- After the judicial system rejected Trump’s false claims of election fraud, Gohmert stated that “no court so far has had the morality and courage to allow evidence of fraud to be introduced in front of it,” which led him to sue Pence in federal court in an attempt to dismantle the process of electoral vote counting.
- Gohmert claimed the Electoral Count Act of 1887 was unconstitutional because it does not permit the vice president to pick and choose which votes are counted. The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas found Gohert had no standing and dismissed the case. Gohmert lost repeated attempts to appeal the decision.
Paul Gosar (AZ-4)
- Gosar’s chief of staff revealed that Gosar asked Pence “to remand the electors back to Arizona pending a full forensic audit of the Maricopa County tabulations” in December 2020.
- Ali Alexander publicly proclaimed that Gosar had been “the spirit animal of this movement,” and later testified to having several “phone conversations” with him. Gosar attended the ‘Stop the Steal’ rally on Jan. 6.
- Trump has endorsed Gosar for re-election this year. In February 2022, Gosar defended white nationalist Nick Fuentes after his subpoena was made public by the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack.
Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA-14)
- In December 2020, both Greene attended a White House meeting with Trump’s advisors and “discussed overturning the results of the 2020 presidentital election.”
- After the election, Marjorie Taylor Greene texted White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows frequently for strategic guidance on overturning the election. She went as far as to suggest declaring martial law to keep Trump in office.
- Greene campaigned at “election integrity events” to argue that “Trump won” in 2020.
- Greene relentlessly spread lies about the 2020 election being “stolen” and her eligibility to run for office was unsuccessfully challenged because of her leadership in the events of January 6.
Jim Jordan (OH-4)
- Jordan began requests for a call with Attorney General Bill Barr and communicated with White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows “regarding efforts to pressure Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolfe to audit his state’s election results” on November 6, just one day before Joe Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 election. Just days later, he participated in a meeting with senior White House officials where he assisted in the development of a “blueprint” to guide Trump’s post-election strategy.
- Jordan was one of the first Republicans to call for an audit of the vote, claiming rampant voter fraud. He publicly embraced the debunked myth that Dominion voting machines were rigged to steal votes from Trump. Jordan was the first to raise the idea for the House to contest electoral votes and actively engaged the Trump White House in attempts to push Vice President Pence to reject electors, despite understanding it was illegal. On January 6, Jordan shared his inflammatory floor speech calling for overturning the election on social media as the Capitol was under attack and police were under siege. Less than a week after January 6, Jordan was back at it, delivering a floor speech where he continued to object to the election results, which he does to this day.
Scott Perry (PA-10)
- Representative Scott Perry is one of the key figures in the plot to overturn the election. Perry participated in meetings with White House staff as they planned a strategy to overturn the results and install Jeffrey Clark, a Justice Department official sympathetic to Trump, to attorney general after Acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen refused to pursue disproven voter fraud conspiracies. Perry is responsible for introducing former President Trump and Jeffrey Clark. Perry engaged directly with acting Deputy Attorney General Richard Donoghue regarding his election conspiracy theories.
- Perry also led the objection to counting Pennsylvania’s electoral votes and is currently under subpoena by the January 6 committee and has refused to cooperate with the investigation. Representative Liz Cheney reported that following the violent insurrection on January 6, Perry sought a presidential pardon.
